Helsingin Sanomat:¨ Opera can be based to a dream if you belive the composer Jani Kääriä. He and the director Jussi Tapola have written the libretto for Osiris-opera, which has it's premiere tonight at the Alminsali of the Finnish National Opera.
The work includes magic and symbolism, and Kaaria tells that he is especially interested in the ancient Egyptian religion and mytology.¨

Rondo: ¨Kääriän musiikki on saanut vahvasti myöhäisromanttisia vivahteita Erityisesti oopperan toinen näytös on rakenteeltaan eheä.
¨Toinen näytös huipentuu pienten nuotioiden valaisemaan, hiljaiseen rituaaliin, jossa solistikvartetti pääsee näyttämään taitojaan.¨

Some criticism extracts after the f.p.(3rd of March, 2003)
Helsingin Sanomat: ¨music is so interesting, that it's been worthwhile to perform the opera¨.¨Obviously the libretto has been just the right inspiration source for the composer, which has made his music to bubble swiftly and colorful, sometimes wild and other times as playful stream of mind.¨
¨The singing voices Kääriä handles variable and expressive and the expression for voices had obviously inspired the skillful soloists. Kääriä seems as a composer to posses a natural sense of dramaturgic handling of rhytm, and he is able to conjure up fast changes of atmosphere, and lust, humor and mysticism.¨
Turun Sanomat: ¨Kääriä has written to Osiris a functioning and sonorous score. The music is multifilament and multilevel, full of life and rich, thanks to the skillful writing of the parts. The composer has also succeeded in combining the text and music, and in building the total dramaturgy.¨
Hufvudstadsbladet: ¨There's plenty of beautiful parts. Kääriä's harmonic language is sensual and he has obvious ability to create trough the orchestra impressive atmospheres. In the second act there's even sacred features. Lyrical tones, but also more multivariate orchestration, even high late romantic abundance as a counterbalance to static pedal point, which Kääriä also willingly uses. In all it's best Kääriä is in his pianissimo landscapes and when he can use the singers' highest register's crystal brilliant colors.¨
Classica: ¨Also in the first act in the music there was the necessary contrast between the white- dressed scientist couple's light comicalness and the black-dressed artist couple's firm grandiloquence.¨
Rondo: ¨Kääriä's music has obtained strongly late romantic shades. Especially the second act is by it's structure integrated. The second act reaches it's climax in a quiet ritual which is lighted up by small camp fires, where the soloist ensemble gets to show their skills.¨

english translations of the originally finnish criticisms

Miten tarina kulkee:
Turun Sanomat:
Huumorilla on Osiriksessa vahva asema. Paitsi että libreton yksityiskohtiin on ujutettu kekseliästä replikointia, monimerkityksisiä sanoja, oopperan loppuratkaisu jättää auki mahdollisuuden tulkita koko juttu saippuasarjamaiseksi hömpäksi.¨

Rondo:

Classica:
¨Oikeasti muinaiseen egyptiläiseen ajatteluun sekä säveltäjän näkemään uneen pohjautuva teos...¨Spiritistisen tiedon lähteillä laulavat Miam, Karnak, Paris ja Israel, jotka lopun maagisissa rituaaleissa jäävät oivallustensa ja näkyjensä varaan.¨

Kirkko ja Kaupunki:
¨Ooppera kertoo kahdesta pariskunnasta.

How the story goes:
Turun Sanomat: ¨Osiris handles modern peoples attempts to gain happiness. There's two station points: science and art. Science solves the fundamental questions of happiness by developing a chemical in order to neutralize the effect of memes which determine how people act. Art on the other hand proceeds by it's own means by trying first to understand the secrets of the myths, but gives fast in and falls also to the results which are apparently easily reachable by serum.
It's easy to draw a parallel from the story to the modern days cacles: drugs, doping and other questionable and by their effects degenerative solutions draw people irrisistibly on their side.
Osiris however is not so simple work. It clings to the subconciousness of people, fears and instincts and hides to it's deep structure still multifilament, symbolic text behind lights and shadows.
The total dramaturgy of the opera is simple and effective. The first act introduces the proper deeds of the people, their reasons and consequences. In the second act the characters gather to consider the meaning of their deeds and try to find more permanent solutions for their problems.
Humor has a strong position in Osiris. There's been worked inventive replication into the details of the libretto, words with many meanings, and also, the final solution leaves open a possibility to interpret the whole story as a soapoperatic fooling.¨//

Rondo: ¨There's a certain spiritual frame in Osiris which is created by the ancient egyptian mysticism with it's god-figures and spell-quotations. Yet the opera is above all an apt description of our own time, since it asks, if you can reach happiness by artificial means, trough chemical compounds.
The young recearch couple succeedes in creating a compound, trough which the sexual pleasure can be made to last endlessly. The couple tests the compound for themselves, which causes both a great sensual pleasure and feelings of omnipotency. Finally everything is sex for the researchers: religion, science and even philosophy.
An opposite side to the searchers of eternal happiness forms the artist couple, sculptor and musician. Only the sculptor Karnak stays faithful to herself while also her companion falls into the temptation of the sensual pleasure. The character of Karnak is delineated out impressive: she fears, but fear makes her strong.
Yet the genre of the work is rather absurd light than tragic, and there's mixing couples, so you can characterize the work like it's creators, as modern Cosi fan tutte.
The plot of the opera moves loose in indefinite future, and in text flash refers to classic literature. The work comments also itself, and in the end it shows up that the main characters are in the weekend's experience travel, which meaning is to provide to young career missiles control of life and extreme- experiences. It is also uncovered that the dancing Seth-Osiris was Miam's cousin from the theatre university.¨
¨The centric element of the stage is a stone wall, which flutes resemble distant the wing pattern of Horus.¨//

Classica: ¨Jani Kaaria's opera in two acts Osiris (1998-2000) takes place in a strange spot of science and art in such a time that has never been known before. Osiris is based for real on the ancient egyptian thinking and to a dream which the composer saw. In the source of spiritistic knowledge sing the characters Miam, Paris, Israel and Karnak, who stay in the magic rituals close to the end of the opera in the power of their insights and visions.¨//

Kirkko ja kaupunki:¨ The opera tells about two couples: The other is a scientist and his assistant who develop a serum which takes away the obstacles of eternal enjoyment. The other one is a sculptor who searches her creation-force from the ancient Egyptian mysteries, and her trubadurmuse.¨
¨In Kääriä's opera the repartee of people who search pleasure is being interrupted every once and awhile by the dancing Osiris-figure, who transforms into his fear and terror expressing brother Seth with a black mask. Seth destroys with his dancing the equipments of the laboratory and the statue of the sculptor, and so makes the subconcious fears of people on the move. In the state of horror they destroy the pieces of the masks with a primitive burning-ritual. Peace returns to the stage and their thoughts brighten.
Does one need a pintch of evil to creativeness? Wonder the characters of the opera and they end up finding that inspiration is born always from good. The scientists, sculptor and musician in the opera aim to divine inspiration and try over and over again to exceed their achievements. Deep down there, in this aspiration can be seen man's eternal wish to be like god.
In the end of the opera there's a surprise, which knows to say that unless man can reach with his achievements into divine, god can neither be god.¨//

Helsingin Sanomat: ¨The sex theme is developed till further most since there's available both mixing partners and gay and lesbian affairs.¨/
¨A real comedy Osiris doesn't seem to be, but Osiris seems to be a certain type of a ritual, where the idea is to conjure up the mythical dormant archetypes in people.¨/
¨The dancer Ville Mäki soars as a symbol of inspiration and as a god-figure, which is a role that is absolutely made for a dancer in this kind of myth-trips.¨//

Huvudstadsbladet: ¨In front, on the right creep two white long snakes under the transparent pyramid-shaped shield. Rises a curious head every once and awhile. A similar basic arrangement with a little variation is also in the second act, a blue library.¨
¨Sometimes good, sometimes bad. The dancer Ville Mäki fulfills Jani Kaaria's opera with magic, sometimes as Osiris and other times as a personality of evil Seth, and finally as Horus-eye, the all-viewing and victorious.¨//

english translations of the originally criticisms in the finnish papers

Osiris-opera begins in the present time, but tells magically using different symbols, about the triad-divine Osiris understanding. There comes along the disturbance of the evil Seth, releasing Isis (or Nut)-conciousness, and the victorious eye of Horus, that sees trough everything.
In the opera Osiris, there wander going trough ecstasy, the laboratory scientists Miam and Paris; and the more ritualistic Karnak and Israel, who search the conciousness of good and evil while also practising some art. Osiris-opera represents in a way an ancient Greek play with music. If you  look at it that way, you find the true character of the work.

Writers and composers comment: ¨Osiris¨-opera is a mystical episode with a fantastic will.
